Kiersten is one of the main protagonists in Water Demons.
Not much is known about her past, but the fact she was a wild kelpie when she met Lewis and that she left her former territory due to pollution, human activity and unicorns' presence.
Kiersten and the Mind Monster are closely tied.
Kiersten is a strongly built freshwater kelpie. She has white/beige fur with golden accents and stripes, which is unusual for a kelpie. She has wings on her head instead of actual ears, and no visible pupils. She often has visible feathers on her back and shoulders.
In abyssal form, Kiersten wears a darker orange color. Fins on her shoulders are very developed, almost wing-like. Her ears-feathers turned into fins, but are still keeping their characteristic shape. Her gills and bioluminescence are yellow and white colors. Her tail is built similarly to an axolotl's.
Once a very aggressive mare, Kiersten became calmer and wiser with the years passing. Kiersten is pretty cold and serious at first but she’s actually kind and playful when she is with her relatives and friends. She can be very severe and wants things to be done the right way.
She knows her differences and shows ambition to surpass herself despite her odd colors and appearance. If she is showing a peaceful and self-confident image to other characters, Kiersten is shown completely unleashed when her son was attacked. She can quickly lose control and become very violent, even if she regrets it afterward.
Kiersten seems to have a lot of hate for pegasi, and doesn't seem to appreciate when she is compared to them because of her ears and feathers. Because of her dual nature, she has conflicted instincts and thoughts, as it can be shown when the Mind Monster is talking. Kiersten seems to have a lot of hatred for herself and is not very talkative about it. She keeps most of her conflicts to herself.
Lewis
Kiersten and Lewis are mates ; as kelpies mate for life, their bond is unbreakable. Kiersten trusts Lewis and knows he can handle situations the right way, but she seems to be more worried than she wants to show when he goes on adventures all alone. Lewis has always been supportive to Kiersten during the story, and is sad to not be able to help her more with her inner problems. He will still do anything to help her when the situation is getting too tense.
Wilbur
Kiersten is a very caring mother, but she is also very serious and lacks patience sometimes. She is very protective and loves her son deeply, but gets angry quite easily, especially when Wilbur mentions the fact she looks like pegasi. She doesn't seem to be willing to give him answers right now. When she wandered too far from her son, exposing him to a pegasus attack, Kiersten saved him just in time but felt awfully guilty for having left him being even if it was for some minutes. Wilbur seems to be very troubled after witnessing the violence his mother is capable of.
▪ It is heavily obvious design-wise that Kiersten is not fully a kelpie, because of the wings on her head and the small feathers on her back. However, she still has the major characteristics of a kelpie and is viewed as such by most characters.
▪ Kiersten has leucism, a condition that makes her fur very pale. She inherited it from her father. She doesn't know about the exact terms and causes that make her look this pale, but she is aware of her difference, her colors causing her trouble to hide and hunt.
▪ Kiersten has been shown plucking her feathers, a sign of distress commonly seen in animals, such as birds. Kiersten has also been shown self-harming by biting her feathered parts in a more desperate way of expressing her affliction.
▪ She takes an interest in flowers and uses them to decorate her nest.
